Point-of-sale and document hardware is the equipment where a transaction or a document actually happens - terminals, card readers, receipt and label printers, scanners and cash handling devices.
This is the equipment customers and staff physically touch: the till, the card machine, the receipt printer, the barcode scanner, the office printer, the document scanner. The problems this answers
Transaction and document hardware is judged on availability rather than performance. A terminal that is fast but unavailable for an afternoon costs more than a slower one that never stops. Three considerations dominate: duty cycle - whether the device is built for the volume it will actually see; environment - counter, kitchen, warehouse, forecourt or outdoors; and continuity - whether a failure has a spare, a swap or a queue behind it. Payment hardware adds a further constraint, because it is certified to the acquirer and payment scheme rather than freely chosen, and its lifecycle is governed by security standards that retire devices on a schedule the business does not set. - Payment terminals must be certified with the organisation's acquirer; a device supported by one payment provider may not be usable with another

Which card machine should I buy?
The choice is usually made by your payment provider rather than by preference - terminals are certified to an acquirer, and a device supported by one provider may not work with another. Start with who processes your payments and what they support, then choose between countertop, portable and mobile formats based on where payment actually happens.
Which POS terminal do you stock?
ARRIX does not hold a fixed terminal list at family level. Point-of-sale hardware is specified against the software you run, your payment provider, transaction volume and the physical environment, then sourced. Why did my printer fail after a year?
Usually duty cycle. Every printer has a designed volume, and the manufacturer's maximum figure is a limit rather than a working level. A device run consistently near or above that limit wears out early. The correct comparison is your realistic monthly volume against the recommended - not maximum - duty cycle.
What is the difference between direct thermal and thermal transfer labels?
Direct thermal prints by heating the label itself, with no ribbon - cheaper and simpler, but the print fades with heat, light and time. Thermal transfer uses a ribbon and produces a durable mark that survives months or years. Shipping labels used within days suit direct thermal; asset, shelf and long-life labels need thermal transfer.
Should I buy a laser or an imaging barcode scanner?
Imaging, in most current cases. Laser scanners cannot read codes displayed on phone screens and struggle with damaged, curved or two-dimensional codes. Imaging scanners handle all of those. Laser remains adequate only where every code is printed, flat, undamaged and one-dimensional.
Is the printer price the real cost?
Rarely. Toner, ribbon, receipt rolls and label stock usually exceed the purchase price over the life of the device, sometimes by a wide margin. Ask for cost per page or per label at your actual volume; a cheaper device with expensive consumables is frequently the more costly choice.
Do I need a spare card terminal?
If a failed terminal stops you taking payment, then the question is not whether you need a spare but how long you can trade without one. For a single-lane business, a backup device or a mobile reader is inexpensive insurance against an afternoon of lost sales.
